Situation Vacant – Sales Assistant
HB Longbone & Son has a vacancy for a sales assistant in its store in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The shop sells carpets, curtains, fabric, household textiles and gifts.
The start date is as soon as possible and the hours per week will be between 15 and 20. The actual hours of working are negotiable but hoped to be around 10 am to 3 pm four days a week.
The successful candidate must have knowledge and understanding of curtains and window treatments, be literate and numerate, and be able to work comfortably with both imperial and metric measurements. It would also be desirable though not essential if the successful candidate had a knowledge of fabric.

We offer a full measuring, planning, estimating, fitting and delivery service for all domestic and contract jobs within a 30-mile radius of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
In global terms, we are a small company – the opposite from today’s mega-sized, multi-national giants. We are open 9 am to 5 pm, Mondays to Saturdays.

A sales assistant is one of the most important people on the team of employees in a retail store. He/she is the first person customers see, so he/she must be remembered for having a friendly attitude and being helpful. Along with quality products and good prices, good sales assistants are the key to customer retention. They must have an eye for colour and fashion, along with a passion for design and decor.
An ideal sales assistant has past experience working with the public in a retail setting. He/she will have sales experience and know how to deal with customers in a friendly, appropriate manner. A sales assistant should be able to relate to customers by possessing sewing skills and knowledge in different types of fabric. This person is detail-oriented, has strong organisational skills and able to work well – plus multi-task – under pressure.
Tasks and Responsibilities
One of the main responsibilities of a sales assistant is customer service. Customers should feel as if they are in a hospitable environment in which they are acknowledged. The sales assistant makes customers feel welcome to ask any question about the products sold and exercise patience with those requiring extra assistance.
When necessary, a sales assistant is expected to help customers select the ideal materials for projects. He/she must be able to know how to co-ordinate and pair them with the appropriate tools and accessories.
A sales assistant is also responsible for cutting fabrics to a customer’s desired length and should be able to complete a purchase as a cashier. The sales assistant must stay up to date with store’s sales and promotions.
The sales assistant will be required to deal with all aspects of work in the shop including stock arrivals, checking and pricing. He/she will also undertake general day-to-day care of display and stock areas.
A sales assistant must be able to operate all of the equipment necessary to perform his or her job. He/she must have excellent communication skills and be able to pass information on to customers and co-workers. The sales assistant must be literate and numerate (including knowledge of fractions) and be able to use both metric and imperial measurements. The assistant should also be to be able to document any necessary items in a manner that is accurate and understandable.
A sales assistant must follow the establishment’s dress code. This person should be able to stand for long periods of time and have the ability to move and/or lift products in the store. A sales assistant is also responsible for generating sales, providing merchandising, safeguarding company assets and maintaining work place. Some work will be outwith the shop premises.
Expected Work Hours and Rate of Pay
An ideal sales assistant is flexible and available to work different shifts, including weekends and some holidays. The shop is open 9 am to 5 pm, Mondays to Saturdays. The salary is paid on the 15th of each month, two weeks in arrears and two weeks in advance. Rate of pay is £7.20 per hour.
This job description is not exhaustive and the successful candidate may have to undertake, within reason, any other task as directed by the Managing Director, Bryon Longbone. This post will be provisionally offered to the successful candidate and will be reviewed after three and then six months before making it permanent.
